The benefit of books!

Updated: Jan 16, 2020

This study, from Newcastle University in the UK, has found that parents and carers who read regularly to their pre-school children are giving them a language advantage of up to eight months! Support your child’s language development by ensuring that reading is part of your everyday routine.

- Julia Donaldson books such as Room on the Broom, the Gruffalo, Monkey Puzzle, Tiddler and many more!

- We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. I love the repetitive nature of this book that also lends to supporting your child’s understanding of prepositions over, under and through.

- The Jolly Postman Or Other People’s Letters by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. This is a really interactive book that children love. It features familiar characters such as Cinderella and the three bears. I use this in therapy with older children to make predictions, draw inferences and answer why and how questions.

If you are interested in finding out how to make the most of reading time and to create meaningful interactions around books we cover this topic in our caregiver workshops. Please email us today to find out more!
